| Lower Unit Low Down |
|
Lower units, gear cases, also known as the foot of the motor are
available in a couple different shapes. Rounded gear cases are the
manufacturer’s standard on most motors. Nose-cone gear cases are
usually an aftermarket upgrade; with the exception of some high
performance motors.
Rounded lower units are by far more versatile,
chances are this is the style of gear case for your boat.
If high speed blow out is frequent on your vessel then the nose-cone
gear case should be a consideration. A boat should be running in the
high eighties, low nineties minimum to take full advantage of the
nose-cone lower unit. The nose-cone lower unit is designed to run along
the surface of the water, whereas the round lower unit runs below the
surface. This is how nose-cone gear cases eliminate high speed blow
out. We have experienced cases where the round lower unit would run
faster than the nose-cone even with high speed blowout taking place.
The speed robbing culprit turned out to be lack of bow lift. A
nose-cone gear case reduces a boat’s bow lift, slowing the boat down in
our case by 5 mph.
It’s simple if the boat is lightweight and fast, you can make it faster
with the nose-cone foot. By lightweight we mean weighing well under
most 20 foot production bass and flats boats. Very few boats can take full advantage of the nose-cone’s performance.
